In 1984, he stepped down as president and assumed the role of President Emeritus. He continued to be active in many Christian causes, devoting his efforts toward Christian education and world evangelization.

Celebrating his 90th birthday in March 2006, Engstrom told friends and fellow World Vision staff members that “whenever the Lord calls, I’m ready. I’m not only ready, I’m eager. I’ll have all eternity to celebrate God’s goodness and grace.”

Dr. Engstrom’s wife Dorothy preceded him in death in 2005. He is survived by their three children – Gordon, Don and Jo Ann.
