BRADBURY, California. Dr. Ted W.
Engstrom, a member of the CMI Board of Reference and
President Emeritus of World Vision International,
went home to be with the Lord on July 14. He was 90
years old.
A major figure in evangelical
circles for more than 50 years, Dr. Engstrom was a
prolific writer, a gifted preacher, a noted
humanitarian and innovative Christian executive.
Through his years of ministry,
Engstrom served as president of Youth for Christ,
Executive Vice-President of World Vision, and
President of World Vision. He is credited with
pulling World Vision out of debt and helping it
become one of the premier humanitarian relief
organizations in the world.
In 1984, he stepped down as
president and assumed the role of President
Emeritus. He continued to be active in many
Christian causes, devoting his efforts toward
Christian education and world evangelization.
Celebrating his 90th birthday in
March 2006, Engstrom told friends and fellow World
Vision staff members that “whenever the Lord calls,
I’m ready. I’m not only ready, I’m eager. I’ll have
all eternity to celebrate God’s goodness and grace.”
Dr. Engstrom’s wife Dorothy preceded
him in death in 2005. He is survived by their three
children – Gordon, Don and Jo Ann.
